- Signature red lip - very neat outline (use lip liner and/or conceal the edges to get a really neat look)
- Defined brow, but not thick.
- Faces are contoured and blush is fairly subtle.
- Eye shadow is light, perhaps pastel or neutral, with defined crease.
- Looks tend to be quite matte as opposed to shiny.
Want to know what I did? Read on...
Step by step
- Clean face. I actually have lip stain here from trying on Covergirl's Hot Passion, that's quite obviously not my natural lip colour. That lipstick really doesn't come off, even with a lip scrub!
- Hair up. The Cherry Dollface makes it look a WHOLE lot easier than it is to do 50s hair! I was struggggling to get those pin curls at the back and I didn't have any hairdressing-style hairclips so I just used bobby pins.
- Prime eyes. Too Faced Shadow Insurance (my favourite) & NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk over lid. Adjust face into seedy expression and you'll get what I have above there. Using a white eye base like NYX Milk really helps intensify the lid colour! Although you can't see that at ALL because I haven't taken any pictures showing my lids. Mmm.
- Eyeshadow. Used MAC Cork on the lower lashline and crease and MAC Corduroy to intensify the crease, just dabbed at the corner of the eye and into the corner of the crease. Bleennddd. With eyeshadows there's always this scary stage where things don't look right that you have to go through before you get to the final look. Or maybe I just have NFI what I am doing.
- Highlight eyes. MAC Shroom on the tearducts, brow highlight and on the lid, blended into the crease colour and most intensely packed onto the middle of the lid. This is a new eyeshadow, I LOVE it, it's much less shiny than my previous goto for eye-area-highlight, Stila Kitten. I still love Kitten but Shroom is much less shine/glitter which makes my face look like less of a disco party, because sometimes I want to look a bit more classy. Sometimes.
- Liner & Foundation. Lined my eyes with Stila waterproof liquid eye liner in intense black. I used Revlon Colorstay Liquid Foundation 220 Natural Beige with Colours Medium Concealer, set with Pore Putty Face Powder in Clear (a bit too light for my face atm). I like to do foundation after eyes incase there's fallout from the eyeshadow to clean up. Btw I got "my colours" done a while back, can post about that later if anyone is interested.
- Contour & blush. This is the part where I colour in the sides of my face to give the illusion that it is smaller than it is. Got out my trusty super-cheap Savvy Face powder in 06 Tan. Blush-wise, I used The Balm's legendary Hot Mama with Maybelline LUMIFIT Blush in Watermelon Pink. I like to mix stuff.
- Contact lenses & fake lashes. Before I applied the lashes, I curled my lashes and applied Dollywink Long Mascara (Black). Velour lashes in You Complete Me with DUO adhesive. I've worn these gorgeous mink hair lashes 3-4 times and they're still going strong :D They're pricey but they're so luxurious and I love the way they look, the overlapping lashes give such a gorgeous and natural look. Then I applied circle lenses: Johnson & Johnson 1 Day Acuvue Define (black)
- Lip liner. MAC lip pencil in Cherry
- Lipstick & brows. MAC Russian Red lipstick. This colour never budges, even when you eat and drink! I'm way too lazy for touchups so I LOOOVE this lipstick. Somehow it's a matte lipstick that doesn't stain but has great staying power! I almost forgot my brows and did them at the end with my trusty Korres brow pencil #2. I love it.
- Hair out. If I was going to an 80s party instead of a 50s party I might be able to leave it like this.
- Hair up! Tamed the hair a bit, combed bits out, teased & sprayed the fringe up and pinned parts back. Not quite the same as the video, but I gave it my best shot :D
Ok that's probably way too much of a wall of text, so I'll say goodbye for today! Link me up if you've got any 50s looks / try this / have links to other great 50s tutorials :)
